Fraser Island (K’gari) offers a uniquely Australian blend of natural bushland, amazing freshwater lakes, thick rainforest and incredible wildlife. Fraser Island is known for its spectacular white sandy beaches and beautiful lush green forest areas. However. many are unaware of the true variety of the wildlife to be seen on Fraser Island.

Fraser Island Animals
On Fraser Island you will find forty seven different species of mammals, 354 species of birds, and plenty of reptiles. Many of these animals are shy and vulnerable and prefer to be left to themselves. But a lucky few may be able to spot some of our mammal friends on their walks, drives, or sails around the island.
1. Dingoes
The dingoes that call Fraser Island home come from one of the purest strains in Australia. Away from the mainland, these dingoes have been mostly unbothered by large groups of humans and their pets. This means the dingoes bloodlines and distinctive features have remained as they were centuries ago when they were first introduced to Australia.
2. Swamp Wallabies
Swamp Wallabies are a smaller and darker coloured marsupial, a cousin to the Kangaroo, Swamp Wallabies enjoy the native grasses found on Fraser Island. While there are plenty of reported sightings and photos, they are a special sight to see as they peek from thick undergrowth and grasses.
Hot tip: You are most likely to see Swamp Wallabies foraging for sustenance at dusk and dawn.
3. Humpback Whales
The spectacular Humpback Whale is just one of the amazing animals that make annual appearances close to shoreline of Fraser Island. August to November are the best months for a Humpback Whale sighting. The Whales pass the western side of the Island on their migratory journey from Antarctica. These gentle giants can be viewed from the safety of the shore or from boat tours a safe distance away.
4. Turtles
Fraser Island’s freshwater lakes alongside the coast mean it holds the rare opportunity for visitors to see both freshwater and sea turtles. Freshwater turtles viewable in Fraser’s clean and clear lakes are the Krett’s River Turtle, Short-Necked Turtle, and Broad-Shelled Turtle. If your days’ activities on Fraser Island take you to the shore you might be in luck. You might see a Green Sea or Loggerhead turtle popping their head up through the salty waves or heading in to shore to find a safe spot to lay eggs.
5. Echidnas
Echidnas are known for its shy demeanour and irresistibly cute face, Fraser Island is home to many Echidna families. Echidna’s grow to a maximum of 45cm, and the fur and spine covered Echidnas can be found digging into the ground and foraging for insects. Echidna’s are a special species of egg-laying mammals and can more commonly be spotted out at night as they feel safe from predators under the cover of darkness.
6. Birds
Fraser Island is home to a staggering 354 species of bird, so is a bird watchers dream! From elusive and secretive birds like the Ground Parrot, through to easily spotted colourful ‘Good Time Boy’s’ like the Rainbow Parakeet.
